The cave is or was also known by the designations of "Cavernas da Mexilhoeirinha", "Furnas dos Mouros", "Gruta do Algar", "Gruta da Mexilheirinha", "Gruta de D. Afonso Henriques" and "Furnas da Mexilhoeira da Carregação", with the designation "Ibne Ammar" becoming widespread from the 70s of the twentieth century, in honor of Abú Bacr Muhammad Ibn Ammâr, Arab poet and governor who may have been born in Estômbar, a town at the foot of the caves (the first references to this designation seem to come from the early 1960s).
